Chevrolet sponsors the Essence Magazine

"Women Who Are Shaping The World"
Leadership
Summit

Margaret Slade Kelley-an artist and Katrina Survivor--Last year Margaret suffered significant damage to her art studio as well as the destruction of many of her original paintings. Despite her personal loss, Margaret is using her artistic talents to make a difference by producing "Rise Again New Orleans." Margaret collaborated with her son Brandyn Slade Kelley to combine her art with a song Brandyn wrote. The art and music call for people to "put a face" on their giving to help rebuild the area.

According to Margaret, the art is "A tribute to the New Orleans we love and the family and friends we miss."

As a proud sponsor of the Essence "Women Who Are Shaping the World" Leadership Summit  Chevrolet recognized the importance of women like Margaret, who are shaping our world. Margaret will share her personal story and will showcase the art she is producing to assist Katrina survivors. In addition, Chevrolet team members  explained what Chevrolet is doing to support others in the region.

New York (September 22, 2004)—A custom-painted Chevrolet SSR will go up for auction on Monday, October 4 on ebay.com. Click here to view the vehicle. The vehicle was given to the Coca-Cola Presents the 10th Anniversary Essence Music Festival team in July in honor of the Festival’s 10th anniversary. Proceeds from the vehicle, featuring original artwork by artist Margaret Slade Kelley, will be given to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts|Riverfront (NOCCA|Riverfront).
The Coca-Cola Presents the 10th Anniversary Essence Music Festival, known as “the party with a purpose,” is the nation’s largest annual African-American event and gathering of musical talent in the world. The Festival has become a destination of choice for families and friends as they schedule their reunions. This multigenerational Festival offers spiritual and financial Empowerment Seminars during the day, which are free, and exciting performances at night where Festival goers can dance and sing along with the biggest names in entertainment—rhythm and blues, classic soul, hip-hop, neo-soul and jazz—all on five stages within the Louisiana Superdome. This year’s festival performers included Prince, Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, New Edition, Gladys Knight, The O’Jays and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.

The SSR’s hood is the canvas for “Creole Lady,” an image that brings together the Coca-Cola Presents the 10th Anniversary Essence Music Festival and the African American experience. “Creole Lady” is a mosaic of oranges, reds, blues and greens and is placed in the Historic French Quarter of New Orleans. Chevy commissioned the work from Kelley who is known for combining social, expressive and personal images in her work. In 1995, Kelley created three pieces of artwork that served
as the backdrop for the Essence Awards.
